For' a' torre
Since ancient times Monte di Procida, an offshoot to the north of the Phlegraean Fields, was a privileged place for controlling the sea. For this reason, many place names recall elements of defense.
Ancient Torre Fumo (lit. smoke tower) was built in 1500 by Procidan people to escape the pirates, as a stable refuge, warehouse and even accommodation. The tower stood under Monte Grillo, in the second half of the 15th century it was built another one near the current cemetery. The plan was square, about 15 meters high, with three floors, the entrance was preceded by a walkway that could be withdrawn in case of siege. There were other towers in the area, for example in Torregaveta and Miseno, which communicated with each other through fires, with light signals at night and smoke during the day. The communication difficulties due to the orographic conformation of the area were overcome by the construction of a guardhouse on the islet of San Martino, which served as a "mirror" between the towers.
In the second half of the 19th century, another work necessary for self-sufficiency was the construction of the cemetery in 1872, in the place called Torrione that since 1852 operated as a choleric cemetery. Road works continued in 1886 with the extension of the provincial road that led from the Church to Acquamorta, declared public utility because it would serve communications with the islands of Ischia and Procida, and not only, also the nearby Ponza and Ventotene. At the time it was already planned to build a port in Acquamorta at the service of the community. The end of the 19th century was therefore leaven and laboriousness, with the birth of the autonomist movement among the voters of the Mount for the detachment from the town of Procida, occurred on January the 27th, 1907.
